Selfridges Launches The Film Project

A still from Comme Des Garcons’ film, Madeleine Malraux.

Sometimes, when a project like this launches, the big kick-off party is more interesting than the actual space, but not The Film Project. Instead of being tempted by people watching, drinking, and snacking (lobster, anyone?), I found myself drawn to the presentation spaces. Arranged like a dream playhouse by award-winning set designer Simon Costin, each room was designed with your viewing pleasure in mind. With set-ups ranging from beanbag chairs to room-sized beds, everyone from editors to the designers themselves kicked off their shoes and snuggled in to watch the designers’ creations.

A still from Gareth Pugh’s film, Club Nouveau.

“The brief to the designers was very open – the only stipulation was that there was a strong female character at the centre of each film,” said Alannah Weston, Creative Director of Selfridges.  “We wanted each designer to freely express their vision of a woman who they found captivating and inspiring.”

The exhibition runs from today until March 25, but if you can’t make it to London, you can see all of the films at style.selfridges.com
