Italian luxury house joins in on the eco trend

Iconic Florentine luxury goods house Ferragamo recently benefited from a jolt of publicity thanks to a limited edition range of custom period Ferragamo footwear. The range of shoes were made for Nicole Kidman’s character Lady Sarah Ashley to wear in the movie 'Australia' and the company subsequently released the shoes for sale to the public. That’s not where the news stops however. It was just announced that the house has opted to get on the green bandwagon and get in on the ongoing eco trend.

The house has created a line of environmentally friendly bags for spring called Eco Ferragamo which they are saying was developed to underscore Ferragamo’s core values and its focus on global conservation. WWD is reporting that the bags are crafted with an innovative tanning technique that results in metal-free colored leathers without pollutants and that they are dyed using tannins derived from tree barks, a process certified by the German Institute SG — Mark guaranteeing that no environmentally harmful substances have been used based on 10 strict parameters.

The soft bags also reportedly have a natural texture and sheen, are lined in handwoven hem, and are completely biodegradable and water resistant. There will be five day bags -- from small totes to a maxi hobo which feature Ferragamo’s signature “Gancino” metal logo – in the eco collection. As for colors, they include tobacco brown, lemon yellow and grapefruit pink and they will be available in Ferragamo stores worldwide starting in February. The prices range from $1,190 to $1,890.
