A slew of white looks...

Frida Giannini has caught a lot of flack since joining Gucci as the brand’s creative director (most notably her Spring/Summer 2009 collection which was widely panned)  While nothing can ever quite beat the glory of Tom Ford-era Gucci, I think Giannini is doing a great job at creating looks that appeal to the very wide demographic of customers that the Italian label has come to attract. Ironically enough, although Giannini wrote in her program notes that her collection this season was inspired by the little black dress, not only was the color not the dominant one, but her show kicked off with a slew of white looks.

Though white may conjure images of angelic-ness and innocence, Giannini’s looks were strong, dominating, sexy, and provocative, without falling into the Versace-esque showing of too much skin. The designer expertly worked with cut-outs, contrasting textures, and there was a to-die for white leather jacket (a new trend? I hope so…).

Most of the looks – whether white, taupe, or black – were kept fairly monochromatic from head to toe. Giannini let the light embellishments, fabrics, cuts, and fits do all the talking. There were, however, some ikat prints (perhaps aimed at the jet-set traveler), that brought a welcome jolt of color to the collection.
