A juxtaposition of simplicity and luxury

Since gaining a diploma in graphic design from Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne, jewelry designer Ligia Dias has been very busy. She spent three years working with Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, then launched her own collection in 2005, inspired by the work of Bauhaus textile artist, printmaker, and occasional jeweler, Anni Albers. The result was a juxtaposition of simplicity and luxury, a marriage of rope and brass and pearls. 2006 brought forth a collaboration with Comme des Garcons, and Dias’ necklaces and collars enhanced Phillip Lim’s 2008 Spring/Summer collection.

Dias’ latest partnership is with Club Monaco - a holiday capsule collection of five necklaces that once again marry plain rope with more lavish embellishments like Swarovski crystals and pearls.  The results are futuristic, yet classic.  Dias has said that “Every woman should have a version of a pearl necklace in her wardrobe”.  Her latest designs allow that to happen while removing the negative ‘country club, twin set, and pearls’ connotations that such a sentence would usually imply.

In fact, the only downside is that the collection is being released in a limited number of stores; five in New York, three in Canada, and the rest in Asia.
