Karl Lagerfeld's arctic collection...

Not a fan of those Chewbacca-like Uggs that have been pervasive on the streets these past few seasons? Be prepared for them, and more, after the arctic Karl Lagerfeld-designed Chanel Fall/Winter 2010 collection (though the Chanel version of the furry boots were dripping with surprisingly luscious faux fur on the outside, with icicle-shaped heels).

In the midst of a huge iceberg flown in for the show from Scandinavia, models walked dripping in fur and some of the best accessories Chanel has come out with in the past few seasons. Of particular note were the patchworked fur, quilted leather handbags, and the jewelry which was especially plentiful this season, including stacked bracelets, layers of crystal necklaces, and chunky rings - all of which were done along the lines of the ice theme.

Fur was not only in the boots and in the handbags, it made its way onto almost every look, and even included head-to-toe outfits. In a surprising turn, however, the fur used for the Chanel show was faux. Though it’s unlikely that anyone will be wearing a knee-length fur skirt or wide-legged fur pants come Fall – fake or not -- there was plenty to love in the  extensive collection (nearly 80 looks) aside from all of the accessories. Gorgeous tweeds - some of which had fur woven into them, ruched and undulatingly-detailed cocktail dresses and separates, fringed pencil skirts, and wide-armed cape coats stood out.

All that said, I couldn’t help but think of the Opening Ceremony and Where the Wild Things Are collaboration when it came to a number of looks, particularly the menswear, jumpers, and head-to-toe fur looks. Fortunately, a number of the pieces that hit the runway will surely be cut or heavily re-worked before the collection hits retail outlets.

A tangerine striped top not only incorporates the season's hottest color, but the tie-front silhouette works perfectly with maxi skirts and high waist pants.
