The famous 80's stylist/jewelry designer teams up with Marc Jacobs...

If you grew up during Madonna-mania in the 80’s, then you’re familiar with the name Maripol. She’s the French stylist/jewelry designer that made us lust after the rubber bracelets in neon brights that covered the pop tart’s forearms.  Her East Village boutique, Maripolitan, was where the hip and trendy loaded up on trinkets and kitschy art objets.  Maripol was friends with everyone worth knowing back then: Andy, Grace, Sade, Jean Michel Basquiat, both Debbie's Harry and Mazar, and Keith Haring. Her polaroids from the party decade have been exhibited in galleries around the world, and she published a book of the candid shots called ‘Maripolarama’ last year.

This year, Maripol teams up with 80’s enthusiast Marc Jacobs to produce a line of startlingly affordable jewelry. The man who brought back Stephen Sprouse and used Richard Prince’s Nurse paintings for fashion inspiration has helped Maripol produce a colorful collection of bracelets and necklaces that would have been right at home on the necks of all who were haute on the fabled downtown scene. Necklaces dripping rubber spike fringe and curlicues of colorful plastic jelly are available at prices that start at $4.00. There are also t-shirts featuring Maripol’s girly logo, cute little keychains, and studded wrist cuffs. The line, Marc Jacobs + Maripol, is available at the Marc by Marc Jacobs boutique on Bleecker Street.
