Spring Trend 2011: The New Crop Top

Be it wool, cotton, or silk, the crop top is being seen on everyone from Anne Hathaway and Margherita Missoni, to regular folks on the streets of Paris, New York, and London. Far form the midriff-baring tops of the 90s, these crop tops are worn loosely with high-waisted bottoms, emphasizing a slim waist and perhaps exposing a sliver of stomach. The new crop top is more sophisticated, and can be worn with a fitted blazer for a more demure look; you can also go for the luxe 70s vibe, which is also very in right now, with super large sunglasses and a faux fur vest.

Margherita Missoni, the gorgeous daughter of fashion royalty, wears a knitted top from Missoni with a flared skirt and tights (above, left). The combination of colors and different textured fabrics keeps the look fresh and on trend. Anne Hathaway (above, right) flashes a little tummy on the red carpet, in a striped Marni top and silk pants. By wearing a tribal necklace, she takes enough attention away from the crop top, so her tummy isn’t where everyone looks first!

Crop tops are perfect for layering, as seen in the street style image above. Here, an army green top is paired over a white t-shirt for added color and texture.

An embellished top, paired with a simple maxi skirt or pants, is a great way to wear a crop top at night. Diane Kruger showcases it beautifully.

The crop top can also be worn with tight fitting jeans, leggings, or a mini-skirt, the key is to show no skin! This floaty and transparent top looks fantastic with leather pants.

Get the look for less! We love these cropped shirts by American Eagle with cute French inspired sayings and stripes. Worn with high waisted pants or shorts, or even a maxi skirt or leather leggings, they are a surefire way to make the transition into spring dressing so much easier.
