Let me preface this post by saying I’m not your average “girly girl.” I grew up playing sports, and until the age of 13, the only hairdo I was rocking was a sleek ponytail (no bumps, obvi). So when it comes to my love life, you can pretty much expect the same. I don’t cook, much to my boyfriend’s disappointment, and the only “sexy” ensembles you’ll find me in are for special occasions. I just love the boho look too much, what can I say?
When presented with this challenge though, I was actually pretty stoked. My boyfriend and I both work from home, so a typical date night for us normally includes a whole lot of laptop action, a quick dinner (most likely prepared by him) and an episode or two of Storage Wars on the boob tube if we’re lucky. Pretty romantic, huh?
That’s why this month I was super pumped to spice up our love life with five fun Valentine’s Day challenges. And yes, ladies, spice things up we did.
Day One: Buy Sexy Lingerie
In case you’re wondering, no, that’s not me in the photo (although I wish it was). I’m more of a boxers/oversized tee kind of gal, like I said before. I did, however, happen to buy this sexy little lingerie set from La Fee Verte for day one of the challenge.
To get prepped for my big reveal, I used the Schick Quattro for Women TrimStyle razor/trimmer to clean up down there. A girl’s gotta have silky smooth legs and a nice bikini line to rock lingerie, right? Not only did my legs look great, they FELT great too. And I felt super sexy sans all that stubble. It's always nice to find a razor that's like a two-for-one deal (and isn't double the price). Not gonna lie, my boyfriend actually used the trimmer too, haha, but we won’t get into all of that.
Once I cleaned up, I stepped into my new lingerie to share a glass of wine with my boo. While he wasn’t the biggest fan of the La Fee Verte top, let’s just say he definitely didn’t hate the bottoms. Hey, you can’t win ‘em all, can you?
Day Two: Surprise Him With A Romantic Dinner
I don’t cook, so I didn’t want to get TOO carried away with this particular challenge, but my boyfriend and I always talk about having a picnic together, so I thought I’d surprise him with a romantic meal of the sort, except inside.
To prepare, I went into serious stealth mode as soon as he left his apartment. I hit up Whole Foods and picked up his favorite sandwich (grilled chicken and sundried tomato aioli with arugula, red onions and goat cheese), along with fresh strawberries, mint chocolate syrup, and a bottle of delicious, yet cheap, white wine. I then set everything up, lit a few candles, and wrote a cute little note with my horrible handwriting wishing him a happy early Valentine’s Day and telling him how much I love him. As I was finishing up though, he almost walked in the door and ruined the entire surprise, but naturally, I played it cool and made him wait in the car (which he did, because he’s an awesome boyfriend).
When he finally did walk in and see everything I had done for him, he was definitely pleasantly surprised. We enjoyed an amazing meal together that night, toasted to life, and even posted a photo similar to the one here on Facebook, which got 8 likes, by the way. Ummm, #bestgirlfriendever!
Day Three: Don A Hot New Look
Wow, I look good! But seriously, major props to the folks over at Byu-Ti Salon in Santa Monica (Sura Radcliffe and Andi Scarborough in particular) for doing such an amazing job helping me out with day three of my challenge.
Our goal for the afternoon? To give me a smoking hot new hair and makeup look.
Now normally, I’m a straight haired chick. My hair definitely does have some natural wave in it, but I typically flat iron it out because my curls aren’t exactly the kind of curls women want, if you know what I mean. For my new look though, I did want sexy, glam girl, red carpet curls. And that’s exactly what I got.
To start with, Sura gave me a good wash using Pureology Perfect 4 Platinum Shampoo and Conditioner, followed by Perfect 4 Platinum Miracle Filler to prep my locks and Color Stylist Nourishing Nectar for shine, body and hold. She then used a 1-inch barrel curling iron and, taking 1-2 inch sections of my hair, curled each piece vertically going away from my face and down. To complete the look, she lightly misted on Pureology Color Stylist Radiance Amplifier and finished with Strengthening Control Hairspray.
On the makeup front, Andi and I both decided to forgo a more bold lip (this is my go-to) and play up my eyes. We even added a few falsies (ARDELL medium length dark brown cluster lashes to be exact) to amp up the drama! You can’t really see them great in this photo, but trust me, they looked fabulous.
As far as my mascara goes, Andi used Maybelline Dark Brown Mascara (you know, the kind in the pink tube). And for my eyes, she applied a shimmery silver all over, followed by a deep green blended into the crease of my lids and a smidgen of bright gold blended right in the center. To line them, she used Smashbox’s Cream Liner in Metallic Bronze for the top and Metallic Gold on the bottom. Both liners can actually be found in the Smashbox Cream Liner Palette.
For my lips, we went for a full penciled in look with the Smashbox Nude Lip pencil in Warm Nude and finished off with a sheer, pinky lip gloss color also by Smashbox.
I had such an amazing time trying out a hot new look, and I know my boyfriend definitely appreciated it too!
Day Four: Plan A Sexy Date
By the time Friday rolled around, my guy and I were definitely in need of a sexy date night. And let me tell you, it doesn’t get much hotter than a Valentine’s Day package for two at one of the chicest luxury boutique hotels in West Hollywood: The Orlando.
To start the evening, we sat down for an amazing three-course dinner at The Churchill (the newest eatery and bar by the creators of The Hudson and situated right at the base of the hotel). For our appetizer, we ordered the mouthwatering Mac & Cheese. No, that’s not the actual name of the dish, and I know exactly what you’re thinking right now, “Macaroni? That’s not really sexy.” But seriously, this was gourmet Mac & Cheese encrusted with herb-parmesan bread crumbs. Mmm mmm, absolutely delicious! Especially when washed down with some Napa Valley wine!
For our main meal, we decided to split the Churchill Burger (what can I say, I’m a meat loving gal) and the Pistachio & Artichoke Pizza. Again, definitely no complaints here, and I’d highly recommend both dishes. I especially enjoyed biting into the secret sauce and homemade bacon on the burger.
After finishing up dinner (we were wayyy too full for dessert), we headed up to our beautiful room to settle in for the night. There we found waiting for us two yummy cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery. Aww, how sweet! We didn’t eat them until the next day, but boy am I glad Magnolia is finally in L.A.
The next morning we woke up around 10:00 am. Since the beds are just way too comfortable to crawl out of, we ordered The Standard Breakfast in bed (that’s bacon, scrambled eggs, and breakfast potatoes), along with a Seasonal Fruit Smoothie. Ah, what a perfect way to end our sexy date stay. Can we go back already?!
The Orlando’s Couple’s Package for Valentine’s Day is $359 and includes deluxe accommodations for one night, dinner for two at Churchill (alcohol not included), a special turndown and breakfast in bed for two or at Churchill.
Day Five: Try A Couple’s Spa Treatment
On the last day of the challenge, my boyfriend and I headed up to Rancho Palos Verdes to spend a day at the beautiful Spa at Terranea Resort and a night at the hotel. In honor of Valentine’s Day, of course, we both opted to get the Couple’s Tranquility Treatment.
Walking into the spa itself at Terranea is absolutely breathtaking. The whole thing overlooks the ocean, just like the hotel, and men and women each have their own indoor and outdoor relaxation areas, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, and there’s even a gorgeous pool smack dab in the middle of everything.
To start our spa appointment, my boyfriend and I eased into a romantic mineral and salt bath together right next to the burning fireplace. Wow, talk about relaxing, I never wanted to hop out of that thing! After about 10 minutes, though, our therapists returned to the room and we headed on over to the massage tables. There, we finished up our appointments with deeply hydrating, aromatic body wraps and oh-so-soothing head, neck, and shoulder massages. It definitely took a whole lot of effort to drag both of us off those tables at the end, but eventually we made it outside and enjoyed a glass of champagne together (see, check us out in the picture above, aren’t we cute?).
The rest of the afternoon we spent browsing the amazing high-end designer clothing boutique Marea at the hotel. And then later that evening, we sat down for dinner together at the scrumptious oceanfront restaurant/bar Nelson’s—he had the Seared Ahi Tuna Sandwich and me, the Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad.
When we finally retired to our room that night, we sunk into a million pillows, shared a glass of wine together, and listened to the waves crash as we fell asleep. It definitely wasn’t easy saying goodbye to this place.
The Tranquility Treatment: An aromatic journey of rose, vanilla, rosewood, cedar, orange and palmarosa bestows a sense of calm, comfort and deep relaxation. A tranquil bath followed by a nourishing and hydrating body wrap, this sensorial experience provides supreme moisture, lasting skin softness and protection. This 60-minute treatment is $185 each and includes a glass of champagne.
