It’s little surprise that Roger Federer is taking some fashion risks. He has, after all, widely been touted as Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour’s crush (she left Jason Wu’s Resort Show minutes before it started to watch the tennis champ play at the French open). In tennis, a sport that favors a classic style, an avant-garde sensibility is not particularly welcome on the court.
Roger Federer’s Wimbledon outfit has created quite a stir, and we wonder whether Anna Wintour would approve of an outfit which caused the Telegraph’s Chief Sports Correspondent, Ian Chadband, to quip, “Good grief, you have to be a bit special or have a hell of a sense of humour to get away with this; think Usain Bolt in golden spikes or Ronaldo in primrose yellow boots.”
The Swiss tennis star wore a military-style jacket with a stand-up collar, epaulettes and golden zip (monogrammed with his initials RF in gold), over a gold-lamé-trimmed waistcoat and a white T-shirt emblazoned with his initials in gold. To finish off the look, Federer donned white sneakers with a glittery gold Nike swoosh and carried a white and gold man-bag.
When questioned about the ensemble worn by the 28-year-old, Nike said the look was intended to be more contemporary, while “still retaining the stylistic cues which make him stand out from the other players.”
