My Perfect Holiday Look: Family Party

There's something about the holidays that always makes me want to add a little sparkle, whether it's a metallic piece, a touch of sequin or a shimmery eye. Each year brings plenty of opportunity to play dress up when the invites start piling up for work events, office parties, family celebrations and of course, New Year's Eve. With a large extended family, I attend no less than three family celebrations including Christmas brunch, Chanukah dinner and my very own annual holiday party, at which I play hostess.

Dressing for a party at home takes a certain amount of finesse: I want to look festive and dressed up, yet I also need to be comfortable while attending to all my hostessing duties. Comfortable shoes are a must since I rarely have a moment to sit down (though I won't go so far as to forego heels) and I can't dress too warmly since the kitchen can get hot and crowded. This year, I'm opting for a gorgeous Diane von Furstenberg sheer blouse with a gold foil leaf print (there's that metallic!) and super comfortable faux leather pants from Two by Vince Camuto. Details are simple: a bold gold cuff from Marc by Marc Jacobs and not-too-dramatic drop earrings. As for shoes, I'll start the night with a fairly manageable 3 1/2 inch heeled bootie, with the option to change into flats later in the night if necessary, though they're pretty comfortable.

As for makeup, I tend to play up my eyes when dressing up, leaving the rest of my face and lip fairly natural. I can't be bothered with re-applying lipstick throughout the night and eyes are low maintenance, even at their most dramatic. I like to use a bit of shimmer on my lids at holiday time and lots of mascara. An eye shadow palette, like the ULTA Wink Eye Shadow Palette, offers many options for creating a variety of looks for all of my holiday events.
