Years ago when I was first starting my career, I was at an event with a dressed-to-the-nines Cosmo editor. After noticing her stunning sky-high stilettos, I couldn’t help telling her how much I loved them — but seriously, ouch. I’ll never forget her reply: “No pain, no glam!” While I’d like to say that fashion means so much to me that I subscribe to the same ethos, I can’t. No matter how much I admire a pointy-toed 5-inch heel or a sleek bodycon dress, I just can’t bring myself to suffer for the sake of fashion.
Finding the perfect balance between fashion and comfort has always been my M.O. After all, what is the point of looking great if you’re cringing from this season’s must-have that leaves you sucking in your stomach all day or barely able to walk a block? Thankfully, it's really not that difficult to find clothes that look as good as they feel. The skinniest of jeans can be found with enough stretch in them to be worn all day long, like my favorite Madewell High Riser Skinny Skinny, while a figure skimming shift dress, like this Colorblock Dress from 3.1 Phillip Lim, can be just as sexy as the tightest bodycon dress — no body-shapers required.
For work, a swingy knife-pleated skirt, like this one from Christopher Kane, is a stylish addition to my comfort-loving wardrobe this season. And for summer weekends, I practically live in tropical print retro kaftans like the ones found at Roberta Roller Rabbit. Of course, no summer wardrobe is complete without a comfy pair of shorts, like this stretch cotton Diamond Ikat Short from J.Crew.
Underneath it all, it's essential to choose comfortable base layers, which is why I'm loving the reinvented 100% cotton panty from Fruit of the Loom. Designed to help you take on the day with even more comfort and confidence, it has a plush-lined, ravel-free waistband, with covered elastic to reduce pinching and digging and a finer gauge yarn for a super-soft fabric. Available in several different styles, including bikini, boy short, low rise hipster, brief and hi cut, these are the panties you want to live in, trust me.
So whether I'm working, out for dinner with friends or hanging with my family, I always dress the part — comfortably, of course.
