Rejoice! Black Leather Dresses Are Trending Again

Who’s done more for black leather dresses than Angelina Jolie? (OK, maybe Victoria Beckham in her Spice Girls days, but we were too busy raving in metallic crop tops and skin-tight “peggings” to remember.) The tattooed mother of six trillion has been weaving her black magic as far back as 1997 when she walked the red carpet in a leather overcoat dress to promote her film Playing God. Since then, she’s worn every variation of a black dress a woman can muster, from a Michael Kors leather shift at an Inglourious Basterds premiere in 2009 to her strapless Atelier Versace ballgown at a Maleficent promotion in May.

For Fall 2014, designers are resurrecting the black leather dress on their own terms. Frida Giannini at Gucci sent out crystal-embellished leather minis, nodding to the 60s. Nicolas Ghesquière took a different route at Louis Vuitton; he spliced his leather designs with knit skirts for a patchwork effect. And for an extra treat, Christopher Kane trimmed his LBDs with mink. So many options, so little time.
