Elizabeth Rose Interview: Personal Style, Marriage Equality and Staying Grounded

Indie electro songbird Elizabeth Rose would make for one heck of an addition to the street style circuit, with a laid-back yet quirky style to boot, but its her unique sound and political agenda that’s got everyone talking.

We caught up with the fashionable pocket rocket ahead of her big Splendour in the Grass performance to talk about her style both on and off stage, plus issues that are close to her heart, like marriage equality. See what she opened up to us about below.

theFashionSpot: How would you describe your own personal style?

Elizabeth Rose: I would say it’s kind of a mix of sporty street, but I have a lot of fun with colour and prints as well.

tFS:

How does you style differ from on-stage to off-stage?

ER: Lately it doesn’t really differ that much. I still use a lot of colour on-stage. I guess some festivals I play, I probably wear a bit more of an outrageous choice of style of clothing. I don’t really wear many full-circle skirts, I usually wear pants. But on-stage I’ll wear skirts because I move around a lot.

tFS: How do you choose an outfit before a gig?

ER: I always have to make sure I can wear my in-ear monitors set because there’s a belt pack, I always have to make sure there’s something that the belt pack can clip onto. That’s the most important thing.

tFS: Do you ever use a stylist?

ER: No… for my own shows I like to pick out stuff. I used to work with one of my friends Millie Hall, she used to make a lot of my costumes but my style has kind of changed in the last year, so I like to wear more labels and mix it up.

tFS: You’ve got Splendour in the Grass coming up, have you got your wardrobe sorted for that?

ER: Nope, haven’t got my wardrobe sorted for Splendour but lots of ideas! I’m going to be dancing in my set so it has to be something that is easy to move in but also quite street as well.

tFS: What are your favourite labels?

ER: Clothing wise I love Marrimekko. It’s probably my favourite all-time label. I love the colours and the prints, it’s fun.

tFS: What do you love about Aussie labels?

ER: I also think we have a lot of great local labels that use a lot of great colours and prints. I love that we’re up there as well as who people look to for fashion.

tFS: You’ve covered “Rhythm of the Night” for triple j’s Like a Version, do you have a favourite 90s tune?

ER: That is it! But I also like “Crush” by Jennifer Paige.

tFS: Your latest release, Division, is about Marriage equality. Is it a subject which is close to your heart?

ER:

It is. Some of my best mates are in same sex relationships so it hurts me as well because I want to be able to see them have the same equal rights that I do.

tFS: America just legalised same-sex marriage throughout its country, which is a positive sign, although Australia is yet to make the move. If you could say one thing to Tony Abbott regarding this, what would it be?

ER: Grow up.

tFS:

How do you stay grounded in the entertainment industry?

ER:

I feel tiny still, but family is really important to me and I keep that as a priority.  I would hate for that to ever be jeopardised.
