The power of plaid is inescapable. Throughout history, it’s been worn by both the establishment and the anti-establishment. Aristocracy has flaunted it, military regimes have adopted it and rebels have owned it, from the Scottish insurgents of the 1700s to the counterculturists of the 90s. The pattern may not be as political today as it was in the past, but it still packs just as much punch.
For Fall 2015, designers reworked the checked fabric into edgy outerwear, statement-making suits and daytime dresses that have a personality of their own. At Balenciaga, for instance, Alexander Wang brought the ladies who lunch downtown with plaid kilt-style skirts paired with biker boots. Meanwhile, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Coach splashed the pattern onto our favorite fall cover-ups, from classic peacoats to moto jackets and trenches.
