Why Smaller Bags Are Taking Over the Once-Popular Tote

The moment we first noticed the small bag trend we thought, well, hallelujah! It meant we could finally say goodbye to the mystery black hole we all have lurking in our bags and hello to finding our phone in 0.001 seconds, and we’re all for it.

Despite the convenience of the new trend, research proves that small bags are, in fact, taking over as crossbody bags, clutches and even shrunken versions of full-size style handbags replace the recently fashionable over-sized totes.

Women are no longer expected to have everything in their bags, lugging around everything from baby wipes to full-size umbrellas, and are instead downsizing to a bag which holds just the right essentials to get us through the day: mobile phone, photo ID, credit card, lipstick and some coffee coins.

Of course, there will be some days where a tote is needed to carry your extra items, but when you really think about it, when did you use that first aid kit sitting in the bottom of your handbag anyway? How many times did you actually look at that brochure from your local beauty salon sitting in your side pocket, rather than just looking at an online version instead?

Plus, with fashion now taking advantage of the technologically advanced world we live in, with almost everything we need being stored on our phones, there’s really no need to carry around large items like notebooks anymore.

Oh, and we definitely won’t miss those red strap marks we all once bared on our shoulder or forearms as we fully acknowledge that good things really do come in small packages.
