How to Rock Overalls Without Looking Like a Toddler En Route to a Hoedown

The 90s resurgence is responsible, in part, for the recent rise of overalls. Baggy throwback styles by brands like Lee and Calvin Klein are basically the epitome of summery tomboy cool. A cropped off-the-shoulder top and sleek sneaks will bring the look firmly into the present. Pro tip: Overalls are the perfect pairing for those who wish to dabble in the crop top trend without fully committing. Who could say no to a flirty, fashionable outfit that conceals our BBQ-induced burger babies?

They’re also insanely convenient. Much like maxi dresses or jumpsuits, overalls are not only an outfit component, but capable of being your entire ensemble. At night, throw on a blazer to polish up your thigh-length denim dungarees. During the day, layer overalls over whatever topper matches your mood, whether that entails something arm-baring and embellished, bell-sleeve and button-down or skin-tight and waterproof. (Have we mentioned they’re formidable alternatives to beach cover-ups? Well, they are.) For cocktail events, opt for overalls in more sophisticated fabrics and you’ll be sitting pretty (and cozily).

These carefree one-pieces exude that Jane Birkin-esque level of chic nonchalance to which every accessory and item of clothing aspires — so long as the tailoring is right. To elongate your legs, opt for something fitted and flared. If you prefer a baggier silhouette, be sure to cuff your hems (or, ideally, stick with shortalls) to avoid being swallowed in denim. And you can never go wrong with a clinging black pair.
