For Spring 2017, leggings cozied up to the runways in new fashion-forward formats. At Versace, a pair of polished curve-skimmers manicured an all-navy look. At Gucci, track pants took on new form-fitting shapes. At Rodarte, a pair of semi-sheer knit leggings came layered under a matching dress. (Side note: The pants-under-dresses look is going to be everywhere this winter.)
As usual, Alessandro Michele, Donatella Versace and Kate and Laura Mulleavy called it — stretchy bottoms are (still) in. According to data from Slice Intelligence, female consumers in the U.S. are over the constrictive and into the comfy (shocking, we know). In the past year, online leggings orders have increased by a whopping 41 percent. (By contrast, denim orders grew by a mere 3 percent.)
While leggings remain the jumping off piece for athleisure fanatics (Gigi Hadid, we’re looking at you), years into the trend, our lazy day gear needs to work a little harder to make it out of the gym. No longer can we simply throw on a satin duster coat and call it a day. The best leggings themselves have to pass muster. Designers are doing their part, offering sheer, embellished, embroidered and even sequined iterations to spring us out of our sportswear slump.
