34 Must-Have Items in Velvet, Fashion’s Forever Crush

Records show that King Richard II of England (1367-1400) was so fond of velvet that he requested to be buried in it. Based on the wealth of plush pajamas and luxe flapper dresses at Victoria Beckham’s Spring 2017 presentation, the Brit fashion icon of our time seems to feel similarly. Despite the fact that the elegant fabric is usually (unfairly) confined to cold weather — and notwithstanding it being pretty difficult to clean — year in and year out the opulent textile continues to grace the runways in new and exciting forms. As for its latest throng of admirers, plunging bustier tops and cocktail dresses walked at Versace, navy blue pussybow dresses took center stage at Marc Jacobs and romantic pastel pieces glided across the catwalk at Sies Marjan, to name just a few.

According to Pinterest, velvet has risen in popularity a stunning 84 percent since last year — and that’s saying a lot, given that Sonia Rykiel, Chloe, Christopher Kane, Dries Van Noten and Alberta Ferretti all showcased their love of the fabric for Fall 2015.

We think we’ve made our point. And so, without further ado, for the umpteenth season in a row, we’ve rounded up the latest and greatest plushy velvet fashions. Click through the slideshow above to shop ’em all — because who could be blue in velvet?
