The Future Is Now: Shop Fall 2017’s Silver Trend

Local Earth girls in search of the next big trend, take note: the space cadet look is in. Futuristic, high-shine ensembles walked the Fall 2017 runways of (deep breath) Paco Rabanne, Saint Laurent, Loewe, Maison Margiela, Bottega Veneta, Christopher Kane, J.W.Anderson, Gypsy Sport, Balenciaga, Chanel, Miu Miu, Michael Kors, Mugler, Isabel Marant, Genny, Sally LaPointe and Dolce & Gabbana, to name just a few.

For some, like Saint Laurent and Mugler, the glittery, strong-shouldered ensembles harkened back to a (kind of?) simpler time — the days of Studio 54 to be exact. For others — Karl Lagerfeld in particular — the message was clearly one of escapism (as in, get me on a rocket to anywhere but here). Man Repeller’s Amelia Diamond likened Sally LaPointe and Michael Kors’ stiffened silver getups to tinfoil-wrapped leftovers. Were the designers calling out New Yorkers on their crippling Seamless habit? Anything’s possible.

Meanwhile, the street style stars offered up more wearable takes on the trend, opting for pops of silver as opposed to blinding, head-to-toe looks. We, too, advise trying out a metallic accent before you go full-on astronaut. (A glittery boot is a safe, Rihanna-approved bet.) Silver livens up the simplest of outfits (plain white tee plus silver pants equals match made in heaven, just ask Jonathan Anderson) or works like a neutral when paired with loud prints or bold primary colors (see: the leftmost street style sighting). A word of caution: Skintight and faux leather pieces, when done in silver, risk looking cheap.
