Stripes Are Taking Over Spring Fashion: Here’s Proof

Stripes are always in style, but on the Spring 2017 runways, they took on a whole new personality. From in-your-face colorblocked incarnations to a reimagining of classic pinstripes, stripes have gotten a real makeover. Rosie Assoulin got graphic by offering up a colorful umbrella halter top and matching maxi skirt. Clashing stripes really popped at Ports 1961 with oversized tops tucked into equally engaging bottoms. Fendi’s cropped sweater with cut-out detail has already become a street style mainstay and the brand worked in both striped pants and skirts as complements. While 3.1 Phillip Lim opted for a little contrast by teaming a spaced out striped blouse with a narrower striped miniskirt.

Stripes styled with stripes was a common thread on the runways and Gigi Hadid picked up on the matchy-matchy theme by sporting a set of green Morgan Lane silk pajamas. She made it work for daytime by half tucking her top and adding in statement glasses along with neutral Stuart Weitzman sandals. Kendall Jenner also advocated the half tuck by slipping a section of her red and white button-down through her short shorts so it peeked out the bottom. Cara Delevingne’s banded blazer was offset by a slinky white blouse and side studded trousers.

Almost in premonition fashion, street style aficionados also embraced stripes while taking in the Spring 2017 shows. Lined ruffled blouses were more than strictly business, especially when combined with a crinkled miniskirt and black booties. Doubling up on stripes didn’t always equate to an exact match as some showgoers favored both diagonal and straightforward interpretations. Stripes were easily added by wrapping up a printed dress with a colorful belt, panel or sash. And scene-stealing striped skirts were allowed to shine by topping them off with basic off-the-shoulder tops.
