The Lowrider Scare Is Over: High-Waisted Pants Are (Thankfully) Back for Spring

Remember last summer when the internet collectively lost its guano over the return of lowrider jeans? Well, Roksanda Ilincic called and she wants her high-waisted denim back. We live in turbulent, fickle times, friends. That, or a lack of sales, sent designers back to the drawing board to figure out where things went wrong (hint: no one has the time or discipline to curate washboard abs). Let’s just hope the design houses have learned this lesson for good now so history doesn’t repeat itself and send us back into a frenzied panic.

This time around, the high-waisted trouser has a few new iterations in store. The first and most common being the paper-bag waist look, which entails wrapping some sort of rope-inspired belt tightly around your waist with the top of the trouser bowing out at the top. Perhaps you’ll recall when Mary-Kate Olsen delighted her legion of fans when she rocked this look back in 2007. The second way to revisit the much cherished high-waist look is by further elongating the top with an additional garment rising past, like Balmain’s spandex or Alexander Wang’s leather corsets. Last, and technically least, high-waisted trousers are now back in capri length at Isabel Marant for a fresh and fun spring look, replete with strappy sandals. If you’ve been wanting to wear high-waisted trousers but aren’t a fan of donning the wide-leg, floor-sweeping hem, this one’s for you.
