Granny-Style Crochet Stitching Gets a Seriously Chic Upgrade

Spearheaded by retailers like Carbon38, we’re now at a point in fashion where athleisure is dictating fashion trends. Not only are high-end fitness brands making clothing that increasingly looks like ready-to-wear (even shoes!), but people are actually wearing them to work, to the bar and beyond. And it’s not only in the United States. The trend is taking shape in places as far-flung as Tel Aviv and Ibiza.

The latest trend to hit active fashion and beyond is crochet stitching. While designers like Missoni and Sonia Rykiel have been using crochet for years, the style has long been associated with granny fashion (there’s even something called a granny square).

Carbon38 CMO Helena Kaylin notes that its crochet stitching inspiration came as a result of her team’s extensive traveling. “We give our designers the freedom to test new ideas and explore new ways of developing and designing product,” she says. “We focus heavily on craft, craftsmanship and incorporating handcrafted elements traditionally found in RTW and bringing those details to life through the lens of activewear, but these pieces are statement pieces you can wear both in the gym as well as in everyday life to help freshen up summer wardrobes.”

Given how breathable crochet stitching is, now is the perfect time to try out this trend. See above for some of the best options.
