Stay Cool With Hot Summer Looks

Retro styling is always a hot trend, so a flirty summer dress with a full skirt is a must. Lovely examples abound, at many different price points.

Madras plaids and floral prints are a wonderful way to break out of a winter wardrobe of basic black and grey.

For a day strolling through the park, add a sporty straw hat and cat-eye sunglasses (my favorites are from Rochas).

For night, add a statement necklace of ribbon and pearls.

Tie-dye returned in the S/S 2010 collections of Blumarine and Proenza Schouler. Keep it up to date with spare, well cut shorts and floaty tiered minis.

Hoop earrings and thin metal bangles accentuate the summer boho look. Throw on a big, floppy sunhat for fun.

Sandal booties remain a hot trend, especially those featuring a thong toe and fully enclosed ankle.

The daring shorts are great with sleeveless button downs and fitted T’s. H&M offers a floral version that’s particularly adorable.

Flat or wedge heeled gladiator sandals fom Cole Haan’s new FLX line are fine for day, and for night add a cleanly designed pair of pumps.

Ethnic prints are hotter than ever, with strong offerings from Duro Olowu and Suno. Something like Olowu’s patchwork jacket can be paired with a white tank and a a pair of slouchy DKNY khakis rolled at the cuff.

Suno offers lightweight halter style dresses with pockets, great for no stress summer dressing.

From Calvin Klein, there’s a one-shoulder architectural classic that’s exceptional for it’s expensively simple style.

You can take a body conscious minidress (like the one from Twenty8Twelve) and add a denim vest or jacket with a bright scarf and flirty flats from Chanel or Tory Burch. Classic, clean, and beautiful with no fuss.

Don’t forget that summer sun is also hard on skin. Philosophy makes Hope in a Jar, with SPF 20 broad spectrum sun protection. Carry it in your bag, along with moistened facial wipes to keep bacteria from breeding on sweaty skin.

Evian misters in travel-sized cans keep you refreshed throught the day. Scarves and straw hats can protect hair from harsh sun, and make sure to de-tangle and condition hair wet from swimming. Exposed feet need more nurturing, so exfoliate witha pumice stone and moisturize with products such as Body Shop’s Peppermint Foot Lotion.
