How to Wear Spring’s New Silhouette

Fashion is about a lot of things, but at the end of the day, it’s first and foremost about economics. So, it makes sense that just when skirts have gotten about as short as they can get and pants have gotten as slim as possible, the newest trends completely reverse what we’ve already got stocked in our closets. Lucky for us, this spring’s mix of proportions are not only complementary, they can work no matter what your body type. Here’s a look at three of the most excitingly fresh silhouettes.

Cropped Tops

Even women with washboard abs tend to approach cropped tops with trepidation, but this isn’t a trend that has to be intimating. Contrary to popular belief, cropped tops don’t necessarily have to entail baring your entire midriff. In fact, there are plenty of options that allow you to reveal just a smidgen of skin to keep you on trend with the season’s new proportion, while staying within your comfort zone (Laugh Cry Repeat has perfected this look). While cropped tops work best with high-waist pants, high-waist skirts, or long loose skirts, no matter how much of your midriff is revealed, opting for one of these bottoms is particularly crucial with a top that is cut closer to the bust than to the navel.

Long Skirts and Dresses

Long skirts are no longer reserved just for black tie events and Rachel Zoe-style bohemia. In fact, they can work any time of day and, for a hint of sex appeal, you can opt for one with a high slit. When going with this look for the daytime, choose a loose or simple straight-shaped, monochromatic skirt with a skin-covering, fitted top – ideally a simple tee – and rely on accessories for textural appeal and some added color. After dark, however, it’s free reign! If your style is more on the demure side, opt for a wrap-style slit dress or a frilly ruffled one in either a monochromatic color or a simple print. For the more adventurous, opt for sequins, animal prints, or saturated bright colored dresses and skirts.

Wide Leg Flared Trousers

When it comes to bottoms, the 70s are back for spring 2011. This season, opt for slouchy, fluid trousers with flared bottoms. This is a great day-to-night look that works best with a fitted top tucked into pants and worn with a belt. Or, take a nod from the men and pair the trousers with a fitted blazer and heels.
