DIY: How to Make a Glam Glitter Clutch

Since I was a kid, I’ve had some magpie tendencies — whenever I went shopping, I’d go straight to the shiniest piece of clothing in the store. (My favorite pair of pants in sixth grade were these shiny silver bellbottoms. Just imagine the hallway stares from a bunch of midwestern 12-year-olds!) My magpie eyes never really grew up and today I still love everything with a sparkle. This season, I’m in heaven. It seems that every corner I turn on the web I find a glittery piece of fashion wonder that I’ve never seen before. Jimmy Choo. Miu Miu. Kate Spade. J Crew.  #Ohmygosh.

I decided to try and make my own DIY glitter clutch for the holiday season and I am super pleased with how it turned out. This project is really easy — even non-crafters can glitterize with great results.

For this DIY you need:

  • Purse (I bought mine at a thrift store)
  • Glitter
  • Mod Podge
  • Brush of some kind
  • Spray paint (optional)

Step 1: First you need to make sure that your clutch is gold, or whatever color your glitter is. My clutch was originally blue and I spray painted it gold. I’d advise getting a gold clutch in the first place because some of the spray paint is chipping off my strap. (I don’t use the strap much, though.)

Step 2: Next you need to mix the glitter in a little container with your Mod Podge. I recommend about a 1:1 ratio of glitter to Mod Podge. It will seem like a lot, but you don’t want a thick layer of Mod Podge with no glitter.

Step 3: After you have mixed the glitter, all you need to do is start painting your mixture onto your clutch. Just like the glue you used in elementary school, the Mod Podge will go on white but it dries clear. After it dries, all you will see is the glitter. (Hooray!) You can add your layers of glitter in stages or you can put a lot on at once and spread it out. I’ve actually done both ways and I don’t really notice a difference between the two.

Step 4: Let everything dry overnight. The best part is when you mix the glitter with Mod Podge, your glitter will not go anywhere. It is stuck for good. I haven’t found a speck of glitter on my coat or clothing. I would be careful taking the purse outside in really, really cold weather, though. I know Mod Podge becomes a bit brittle when it is really cold. You don’t want it chipping off.

And that’s it! You’ve got your DIY designer glitter clutch.

So channel your inner magpie and create something shiny! Whether you carry this clutch to your next holiday party or paired with a LBD on a date, it is sure to catch someone’s eye. Just be wary of those 12-year-olds in shiny bellbottoms.
