Andy Lecompte, Hairstylist: A tFS Exclusive Interview

As Madonna’s “mane” man, he travels on tour with the superstar, tending to her tresses.  He’s also styled celebs like Megan Fox, Jennifer Lopez, and Penelope Cruz. He is a true hair genius, and he has the resume to prove it.

Lecompte took some time out of his schedule to speak with the Fashion Spot, where Sarah Howard asked him some of her favorite beauty-related questions.

The Fashion Spot: How did you break into the beauty industry?

Andy Lecompte: After starting to work at my sister’s salon at age 12, sweeping hair and answering phones, I began doing my friends’ hair. I was doing photo shoots by age 15.

I started beauty school at age 16, and landed a job at the Prive Salon at age 18. Because I was living in Los Angeles and working at one of the best salons, it wasn’t long before I gained a reputation and started working with celebrities.

tFS: What are your 5 most coveted products, and why?

AL: 1. Klorane dry shampoo—it soaks up oil and acts as a thickening texturizer.

2. Topix Dark Brow Fibers, which thicken the roots and works like dry shampoo for dark hair.  It’s also great for hiding white scalp when brunettes are photographed.

3. Sheila Stotts de-tangling brush.

4. My T3 curling irons, because they stopped making them.

5. Large hairpins by a company called Gloria Haarpfeil, available at Namies or Image Exclusive.

tFS: What’s your favorite look you’ve created thus far?

AL:  There have been so many moments it’s hard to pick just one. I would have to say one is the “Blame It On Rio” W story with Madonna and Steven Klein.  She looked so glamorous. Also, Penelope Cruz when she won the Oscar for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She looked like such a classic movie star.
