Olivia Wilde: Beauty Look of the Week – Innovative Ponytail

Who: Olivia Wilde

Where: The Berlin premiere of Cowboys & Aliens

Why we like it: While a dark eye paired with a new lip is hardly revolutionary, the look made famous by Bardot has fallen out of fashion as of late. We’re so used to seeing fully made-up faces that it’s both chic and refreshing to see a beauty look that works to highlight, not camouflage, the shape of her face. Similarly, she took a simple ponytail and elevated it to an evening and red carpet appropriate level.

How to get it at home: While it’s fairly obvious that Olivia is wearing hair extensions, this look can easily be achieved with medium to long hair naturally. Before gathering your hair into the ponytail, spray a good amount of hairspray such as Bumble and bumble’s Thickening Hairspray $26 all around your hair and in around the crown. This will not only give the bulbs volume in the final look but will lift your hair off your head for a more texturized base. Once you’ve secured your ponytail, take small elastic bands and tie them off a few inches apart. If you have thick hair, simply pushing the band upwards will give you the bulbed effect but some light teasing can add volume if your hair lacks it. Once you’re finished, spray a finishing spray such as Bumble and bumble’s Let It Shine On $25 all over your hair, including down the ponytail.

In theory, Olivia’s makeup look is flawless, but in reality she would have been better off had she added a few shadows and highlights to her face. After you’ve applied your primer, concealer, and foundation, or tinted moisturizer if you can get away with it, contour your face using a matte bronzer and then apply a liquid highlighter such as Benefit’s High Beam $26 to make your face look more sculpted. This will eliminate the flat-faced look and draw more attention to your eyes and lips. For a subtle coral flush, use a cream based blush such as Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge in Cabo Coral $24. This product is perfect for this look as you can build up the color and really work it into your skin. To get Olivia’s thickly lined eyes, apply a gel eyeliner such as Smashbox’s Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner in Midnight Black $22. A gel liner works best when applying a thick line as you can control the brush and smudge the product slightly. This is an excellent opportunity to wear strip false eyelashes as the attention is all on your eyes, but a few coats of thickening mascara would work for those hesitant to wear falsies. Finish off your look with a nude lipstick such as NARS’ Lipstick in Belle de Jour $24
