Transition Into Fall Lip Colors

Summer is nearing its end (sigh!) and although there’s no need to hide our bright, bold lip colors right away, it’s time to start toning it down a bit. That doesn’t mean it’s time for dark lips just yet. We love sexy, vampy lip season just as much as the next girl, but what about all the time in between now and then? Take a look at how some of our favorite women are transitioning from summer to fall lip colors, keeping it simple and stylish.

Pinks

Tyra Banks kept her lips fun and girly with a soft, baby pink at the Do Something Awards in Hollywood last week. This look is ideal for someone who loves their fuchsia lipstick, and can’t bear the thought of ignoring it until spring—it’s a way to keep the color alive, while simultaneously moving into fall-friendly colors.

To perfect Tyra’s pout, start by lining the outside of your lips with a pale, neutral lip liner, like Naked by MAC ($14), and then begin to fill your lips with the same shade. Top it off with two layers of pale pink gloss pigmented enough to see the color. The neutral base will allow the colored gloss to take over. We like to pair liner with MAC’s Nymphette Lipglass ($14.50), a warmer pink than Tyra’s, but still undeniably glossy, feminine and ready for fall.

Reds

The Kardashian sisters recently launched the latest addition to their never-ending empire (the Kardashian Kollection), and needless to say, the girls looked sharp. Wardrobe aside, Kourtney rocked a dark berry lipstick, too light for winter, too dark for summer, but perfect for fall. This color works best on darker skin tones, and has a very elegant, warm feel to it— it’s ideal for someone who doesn’t feel super confident in a bold red shade.

Trying the Kourtney-concocted look? Shoot for a highly pigmented lipstick that won’t fade too quickly, like Clinique’s High Impact Lip Colour in Rose Spectrum ($14.50). Use a lip brush to paint the color on your lips, starting as close to your mouth as possible and working your way out, using less and less color as you go.

Neutrals

For the girl who’s more into her shadow than her gloss or just prefers to keep lips simple, we recommend following in Fergie’s footsteps. Despite her atrocious outfit at the Teen Choice Awards this month, the singer actually rocked her makeup, especially her lips. Fergie went for a very neutral color, something only slightly rosier than her natural skin tone. The combo drew attention to her sun-kissed face and bold, black liner, both very flattering.

To get Fergie’s look, start by hydrating your lips with a moisturizing balm, like Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm ($3), then lightly swipe a lipstick closest to your skin color on both the top and bottom lip. Pair it with a gloss just slightly warmer than the stick, something with a gold base and layer up. The extra gloss will allow the two products to blend together, giving it a uniquely elegant color.
