Take a Chance with Lena Dunham’s Shocking Smoky Eye

Who: Lena Dunham

Where: 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

Why we like it: Love it or hate it, this is one standout look. The Emmys aren’t exactly an avant-garde playground in terms of beauty, but Lena Dunham’s never one to run with the pack. While we admit this look paired with her matching Prada dress may have been a bit much, it’s a nice reminder to go bold and play around a bit. It’s only makeup! Try adding a bright color into your next smoky eye.

How to get it at home: When you’re doing a bold eye, it’s often helpful to work on the eye first just in case there is any drop down. Build your dark base starting from a third of the way across your lid with Laura Mercier’s Satin Matte Eye Colour ($24) which has an easy blendable texture perfect for a smoky eye. Line the upper and lower waterlines with Ardency Inn’s Modster Smooth Ride Supercharged Eyeliner in Black ($19). Now’s the time to kick it up a notch! Using Stila’s Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eyeshadow in Metallic Emerald ($32) layer the green in the inner corner. This product is great because it comes with a liquid primer that acts as a mixing medium for the shadow, meaning, not only do you get a rich color payoff, but it also lasts all day. Top off your look with a volumizing mascara, such as Buxom’s Buxom Lash in Blackest Black ($10).

Next, go in with a matte foundation, such as Marc Jacobs Beauty’s Perfection Powder Featherweight Foundation ($46), which provides natural finish coverage with a weightless formula. Add a subtle pink flush to the cheeks with YSL’s Blush Radiance in 10 ($45) and finish off your look with Urban Decay’s Revolution Lipstick in Naked ($22)
