Josie Maran: Beauty Starts from Within

I’ve long believed that beauty comes from the inside out and the outside in. Our skin is our largest organ so it’s little surprise that it’s affected as much by our actions as it is by our emotional state. Being stressed stresses the skin and can cause breakouts, oiliness and dry patches. Being happy makes skin glow. Of course, being happy isn’t wholly controllable, but we certainly have more power than we tend to give ourselves credit for. The effect of positive thinking is vastly underrated by most of us. I wake up with the man I love and my two beautiful children. I do yoga to enhance my own mind and body peace. If things become a tad stressful, I take a step back and breathe deep. I channel my inner happy place and remember how far I’ve come and how blessed I am. Being grateful for what you have and not dwelling on what you don’t is a key, I have found, to happiness and inner peace.

Sleep is another major element that affects both beauty and happiness. In fact, it’s the most basic beauty need. A lot of what we do when we put makeup on is to counter the negative effects of lack of sleep. Deep breathing, taking regular breaks, getting enough sleep, and reminding yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to—those, I truly believe, are the keys to true beauty.
