How to Find the Right Red Lip for Your Skin Tone

The trick to finding the right hue comes down to determining if you’re warm- or cool-toned. Here’s a quick test to figure out what suits you: think about if you look better in silver or gold clothes. Test it out by holding silver up to your skin and then a gold shade to see which complements you best, paying attention to the whites of your eyes and smile.

Gold look good? Then you are warm and would look great in a red lip that has warm undertones, like orange. If silver suits you better, then you’re on the cool side. Try reds with blue undertones to best complement your skin.

Often both fair and very dark skin fall into the cool category, while olive, gold and tan skin tones tend to look best in warm colors. Still not sure? It’s very possible you fall in the middle, so consider yourself lucky and experiment with all shades of red.

As for me, I’m warm-toned. Here I am rocking Revlon Super Lustrous™ Lipstick in Rich Girl Red, a universally flattering shade. (Don’t believe me? Check out the tool and see for yourself!) The moisturizing lipstick feels so good on and gives lips a pretty red sheen that’s wearable for work or play.
