Brow Carving Is the Latest Viral Brow “Trend”

Just when we thought Franken-brow madness had peaked — we’re looking at you, terrarium eyesAllure put brow carving on our radar. Violent as the name sounds, brow carving may actually be the least involved and invasive of the new wave of Insta-brows. It’s essentially cut-crease liner, but for your brows.

Austin-based makeup artist Alexa Link is the visionary behind the would-be trend. Per the comments on Link’s initial post (which quickly went viral) the internet is both amazed and confused by the brow-framing technique. We, who can barely get our cat eye flicks to match, can’t help but stare in wonder.

“I like the contrast of the avant-garde brow with a bare eye,” Link wrote in an Instagram comment. Allure posits that, in order to create the arty look, the makeup artist traced the outer perimeter of her brows with eyeliner, creating a definitive border. Judging by the final product, Link then applied eyeshadow along said border, blending the shadow out to achieve a smoky effect. Link has yet to confirm this speculation by posting a visual tutorial to her fledgling YouTube channel, but we suspect, given the post’s popularity, that there’s one in the works.

Other makeup artists have adopted and adapted the trend.

@hollifer__ created an exceptionally pretty terrarium eye/brow carving hybrid.

Others, like Rocsana Zima, glammed up the look with glitter. Call us cowards, but we’ll be sticking with the following (related, but way more wearable) Link-devised look:
