NYFW Fall 2011 Hits and Misses: Day 4 (Forum Buzz)

On Day 4 of New York Fashion Week most of the designers brought out their Sunday best, but the day was not without a few hiccups. Read on for the Fashion Spot forum’s take on the shows.

Forum Buzz NYFW Fall 2011 Hits - Derek Lam, DKNY, PreenHits: Derek Lam, DKNY, Preen

Derek Lam

“The clothes looked easy to wear and elegant at the same time. I loved nearly everything!” [liberty33r1b]

“Derek Lam  is the standard bearer for the next generation of American sportswear.” [agee]

“Derek Lam has produced some of his best work these past two seasons and this is no exception. The market for understated luxury has never been stronger and there exist few designers on this planet who have a knack for making something so luxurious look so easy and effortless[mikeijames]

“I usually dislike DKNY but I actually love this collection.” [foreverandnone]

“A surprisingly sleek collection that I didn't imagine from DKNY for some reason… The capes were beautiful, especially with the black sides that tricked the eye into thinking the model had a jacket cast over her shoulders. I thought the fabric choice for the bi-fabric suits could have been better, but they were a nice idea. [Crying Diamonds]

“Donna Karan has been consistently doing a really great job with [DKNY] and this collection is no exception. I see so many pieces here that I would LOVE to add to my wardrobe. Everything is cut so well and hits just the right note and balance in terms of youthfulness and sophistication.” [ChrissyM]

“[Donna Karan] balanced the colors well. The actual designs also hit the nail on the head every time. I'd love to [have] any one of those pieces in my wardrobe.” [purplethistle]

“Sooo good!!!! I love everything!! The prints, shoes, skirt lengths, blouses, dresses, belts… just everything! Amazing collection.” [liberty33r1b]

“Very chic, my favorite of NYFW so far.” [ForChicSake]

“The more sophisticated silhouette actually harkens back to [Preen’s] earliest work, and I love that they brought back a bit of their knack for tailoring and their sense of embellishment. Those aspects [had] kind of fallen by the wayside in recent years for more emphasis on floatier, frilly dresses and print-work.” [Scott]

“The level of detail in this collection easily makes it one of the most stand out collections of New York Fashion Week. The tops that ended the show alone were made for the spotlight.” [mikeijames]

Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2011 NYFW Thakoon Fall 2011 NYFWHits: Tommy Hilfiger, Thakoon

Tommy Hilfiger

“Tommy Hilfiger has finally stumbled back upon that rich American heritage that launched his label in the first place. Sure, the cuts of these clothes won't stun the fashion flock, but there's a sense of rich American luxury that comes through these clothes much more clearly than we normally see from this brand even on its best day.” [mikeijames]

“Although some of the elements in this collection reminded me of (wait for it) Prada  F/W 10, particularly the loafers and the use of leather in coats and skirts I found this very pleasing to look at…Hilfiger seems to have reevaluated the aesthetic of [his] brand and created something a little more high-end/haute without losing the label's thoroughly American routes.” [Fiercification]

“Thakoon has a hit on his hands with this collection. Not only did he fold in some of that Japanese conceptual fashion into this thoroughly American collection, but he has found that sweet spot—much like his peer, Jason Wu—in between the high fashion look that we all crave and the great sportswear tradition that New York Fashion Week  is known for. Further, I love the confidence with which Thakoon mixed such bold and contradictory influences so much so that they look genius together.” [mikeijames

“Love the colors and the patterns. [Thakoon] really is a master of prints.” [masquerade]

“LOVE IT!! [Thakoon] is such a great designer!” [French Wings]

VPL Fall 2011 NYFW Diane von Furstenberg Fall 2011 NYFWMisses: VPL, Diane von Furstenberg

“Eek… the Grecian draping, the blocking and the overall color scheme looks like a page straight out of Sophia Kokosalaki's book.” [Scott]

“I liked the first half and then it rapidly went downhill. I just don't see how the last few pieces are appropriate for fall or winter unless of course you're Lady Gaga.” [purplethistle]

“This is too messy I think… all these various color shades and materials!!! And the cuts are not really my thing either.” [FakeFlower]

Diane von Furstenberg

“I find this collection quite tacky.” [foreverandnone]

“I am not sure how I feel about it, some pieces are quite nice while others are really baaaad.” [Sweet rus]

“A lot of the garments have a bit more sex appeal than what [Diane von Furstenberg] usually does. For the most part this collection was all over the place… too many ideas in one collection.” [Chris_Couture05]
