Over the past two months, InStyle‘s redesign has been a major topic of discussion and it seems as though we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of it in 2016. But seriously, who cares about layout when InStyle treats us to a cover subject like Viola Davis? Those are exactly our sentiments as the American title’s January cover surfaced and found itself wrapped in praise the moment it dropped. Photographed by Jan Welters, the 50-year-old actress flashes a warm and friendly smile on the cover wearing a delicate gray sequined dress from Lanvin, which has us jumping for joy.
Members of our forums embraced the cover immediately. “Really nice! Love the real SMILE, all the purple and untouched skin!” t-rex praised.
[Piece Of Me] agreed, echoing, “VIOLA! I think this is her first major fashion cover, right? I hope she sells lots of this issue and we will see her on more magazine covers.”
The discussion soon took a negative turn, however. “They are really dumbing down this magazine for the past few months. What changed? Are they having financial problems, too? Awful cover for January,” discredited Handbag Queen.
Benn98 wasn’t shouting from the rooftops either, writing, “I’ll be quite honest, I wasn’t expecting this. Her smile and skin look radiant, but the dress looks awful, layout is overmuch and the colour scheme doesn’t help her skin tone. I hope InStyle won’t continue with these headshot-style covers for 2016. I liked the fact that I can actually see the clothes on their past covers.”
