You have to hand it to Olivier Rousteing for propelling Balmain into the modern age. His relationships with the likes of Kim Kardashian West and Rihanna have been paramount in the iconic French label’s ongoing success and he’s certainly made use of his connections, regularly turning his high-profile BFFs into campaign stars. After Rousteing welcomed back three supermodels from the 90s for the campaign last season, the designer has asked Kanye West to star in the Fall 2016 campaign along with model Joan Smalls. Photographed in black and white, the duo appears to be battling it out in the dynamic shot which surfaced earlier today.
Members of our forums are currently sharing mixed feelings toward the campaign. “Hideous. Awful. Disappointing. Trashy. Two awful people. Just some words in my mind right now. Can I say that I really, really hate this. Like intensely hate this brand right now. They’re doing everything I despise,” slandered a horrified anlabe32.
“I hate Olivier’s Balmain, but this isn’t so bad. Joan and Kanye is so random though. This should’ve been two models or him and Kim,” said Scotty.
“What are they doing?” asked a startled DutchHomme, uncertain of the significance of the shot.
Also questioning the image was sixtdaily: “Is Kanye wearing his horrendous MET Gala outfit? The photography is indeed better here than in the previous campaigns, but Kanye just ruins everything.”
Edie123 wasn’t much of a fan either, adding, “It doesn’t look coordinated. I get what they were trying to achieve but it feels disjointed. I’ll reserve full judgement until I see all the images. I assume there’s a bigger cast, no?”
“It would’ve been funny if they replaced Joan with Taylor Swift!” shared an amused ThatGuyPaul.
“I opened the thread thinking it would be a cheap mess but I am pleasantly surprised. I actually enjoy Kanye on stage and this looks like a performance. I am intrigued to see more,” dodencebt confessed.
Benn98 shared the same sentiments, writing, “Hate to admit this, but I also like it. The actual image, that is, not any of the cast. It has that eerie, empty dance platform type of vibe which was perfectly captured here.”
