Catherine Deneuve Teams Up With Saint Laurent Once Again for the Brand’s Spring 2021 Campaign

There are certain celebrities synonymous with certain fashion houses. Like Catherine Deneuve and Saint Laurent. The 77-year-old actress and style icon has been a friend of the storied French fashion house since the age of 22 with Yves Saint Laurent designing Deneuve’s entire wardrobe for the 1967 film Belle de Jour. Now Anthony Vaccarello welcomes back the French beauty as the face of the brand for Spring 2021. Photographed by David Sims in crisp black and white, Deneuve wears one of Saint Laurent’s signature trenches for the two portrait images and is joined by fellow Vaccarello muses Aylah Peterson and Sora Choi as part of the mainline Spring 2021 print campaign.

The campaign earned mixed feedback. “She should’ve been styled like her character in Belle de Jour… Alas, it’s just another boring regurgitation of Hedi Slimane’s aesthetic,” disapproved Ken Doll Jenner.

“Catherine made some messed up comments about Me Too so she can disappear into oblivion for all I care. Anyway, the campaign looks set to be bland and boring,” noted an unforgiving Benn98.

“It’s decent but nothing can top her Louis Vuitton Spring 2014 campaign. This is just another forgettable black-and-white campaign from Saint Laurent,” THD96 chimed in.

But not everyone felt the same way. “Seeing a campaign with decent imagery of an iconic actress who’s so deeply rooted and entwined with the brand and with the realm of fashiondom shot simply, slickly and skillfully is…good enough. Catherine looks like Catherine at her current age — and still alluring, graceful and soulful,” declared Phuel.

“Catherine Deneuve will always be quintessential Saint Laurent and these images are utterly gorgeous. David Sims has undoubtedly done Deneuve justice, the black and white works wonderfully and I’m just…all for it!” raved vogue28.
