The latest word from retailers when it comes to New York Fashion Week? Meh. Retail executives saw plenty of wearable pieces on the runways, but very little that blew them away. Most designers went very, very safe, sprucing up some of last Spring’s top sellers with new prints and brighter colors. The only reason to go safe is because you’re scared, and fear is maybe the last thing we need to see from our fashion designers. And when department stores and retail boutiques are complaining about fashion being too safe, you know we’re in the middle of a real crisis.
That being said, maybe things will turn around at the fashion weeks overseas. But if last night’s Emmy Awards were any indication of the amount of risk-taking we can expect to see in coming months, we might as well all give up on this whole fashion thing.
