Scarlett Johansson Covers Vogue’s May Issue

May VogueIt's about time someone gave Scarlett Johansson the chance to channel some old Hollywood glamour. US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, well-known for her keen sense of the unexpected, tapped up-and-coming fashion photographer Mario Testino to shoot the actress for the glossy's May 2012 cover.

Styled with Grace Kelly curls and glossy lips, Johansson embodies the fantasy of the screen siren of yore. I've long suspected that the A-lister could pull off this kind of classic pose and polished style, and it's gratifying to see both Vogue and ScarJo take a risk that paid off.

An editorial spread accompanies the cover image. Because everyone knows that the ultimate retro glam accessory is a leopard, the oversized feline predator stays close to Johansson's side from photograph to photograph. The actress' Avengers co-star, Mark Ruffalo, joins her for the photo series, because every leading lady needs the company of a dashing cad lad.

In the crowning shot of the series (at the very bottom), the leopard perches on a piano (as leopards do), while Ruffalo plays a little ditty; behind him, Johansson dances in the style of Seinfeld's Elaine Benes: her limbs flailing every which way, a mad smile spread across her face. The image captures a genuine, unaffected kind of joy: it's a testament to ScarJo's acting ability and Anna Wintour's unmatched originality.
