Looking for something to do over the coming winter nights? There’s only so many times you can watch The Wolf of Wall Street, but fear not my fellow tFSers because there’s a terribly fashionable new show in town for you to check out.
This month marks the Canadian premiere of A Conversation With Edith Head, a play that tells the delicious tale of Hollywood’s legendary costume designer, Edith Head. Outside the SATC franchise or Coco Before Chanel, there are few productions that fuse my two favourite passions of fashion and film, but this theatrical romp promises to be filled with humour, ambition and above all, glamour.
Over her six-decade career of costume design, Head worked on 1,131 motion pictures and helped shape Hollywood history by creating costumes for some of the greatest movie stars including Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Bette Davis, to name a few! She’s kind of a big deal and — notwithstanding her Oscar wins — even spawned her own witty collection of quotes: “A dress should be tight enough to show you’re a woman and loose enough to prove you’re a lady,” and, “You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it,” being two such timeless maxims.
The one-woman play itself will be a behind-the-scenes look at movie lore, starring artist Susan Claassen, whose deft channeling of the godmother of costume design has delighted audiences across the U.S. The show now comes to Toronto, directed by Claassen and produced by The Canadian Alliance of Film & Television Costume Arts & Design (CAFTCAD), following an Indiegogo campaign that raised $2500 to cover housing it at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (12 Alexander St., 416-975-8555).
It will run January 17 -19, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. and tix can be found for $40 on the theatre’s box office page. In the meantime, I’ll be digging out some Coke bottle-glasses and cutting my own blunt bangs (don’t try this at home) in preparation.
