Kanye West Doesn’t Care if You Think His Clothes Are Derivative

Kanye West’s outspoken nature is what helped him rise through the ranks of the fashion industry, and it is his same no holes barred, no filter attitude (and now-everlasting bond to the Kardashian family) that keeps him in the fashion news cycle. The rapper is the subject of a profile in magazine, a piece in which Kanye explains what he’s hoping to accomplish in this new chapter of his fashion career.

To West, it’s all about bringing luxury to the masses, making fast fashion high-end. It is a goal he is slowly approaching with his Adidas collaboration (though he has said before he’s not completely satisfied with the lofty price points of the collection). One criticism Kanye has consistently faced during his time designing apparel is that what he creates looks too much like the work of the established designers he likes to wear on a regular basis.

Well, in case you were wondering Kanye West isn’t concerned whether you think his work is derivative or not. “I would like to be influenced as much as possible,” he told Jon Caramanica. “I don’t care if you can see the influence in something, as long as I made it better.”

Whether or not Kanye’s improving on the work of other designers in his own collections is a matter of opinion, but you’ve got to hand it to him: The guy’s definitely got a distinct taste in clothing.
