#RebelHeart Madonna Endorses Margaret Thatcher on Instagram, Deletes the Post

This time around, the Material Grown Woman’s #RebelHeart social media campaign has upset fans again. Earlier this year, Madonna found herself in a pot of hot water after reposting fan images of Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, Jr. with wire superimposed onto their likenesses in the tradition of her Rebel Heart artwork. Now, Madge is in trouble again for endorsing a controversial “rebel” on her Instagram page, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Madonna has long been an LGBT icon, so queer fans and queer allies were a bit surprised to see the singer paying homage to a woman who was relatively unresponsive in the face of the AIDS crisis and passed a ban on the promotion of homosexuality, which created a whole new set of problems for gays in the U.K. As the Huffington Post explains, Section 28 “led to massive self-censorship and the axing of funding to LGBT helplines and community groups — even to the removal of gay-themed books from school libraries and the evicting of LGBT organisations from municipal-owned premises.”

Madonna removed the photo after a backlash from her fans but hasn’t offered a formal apology for the misstep.
