Carey Mulligan’s May 2020 Cover of Vogue Australia Divides Our Forum Members

The last time Carey Mulligan covered Vogue Australia the image was definitely something to behold with the actress sporting a showstopping Giambattista Valli creation. But the Aussie fashion bible hasn’t exactly been in our good graces lately thanks to questionable Zendaya and Dua Lipa covers. Now Carey is back for May 2020 wearing Burberry picked by Christine Centenera for the cover shot captured by Josh Olins.

Carey’s latest received mixed reviews. “This is so ugly,” declared a less than impressed caioherrero.

“Where to start with this irredeemable cover? Perhaps ‘solidarity’ should’ve been capitalized at least. I would rather they take notes from Vogue Italia and U.S. Vogue and just leave the cover blank with a hashtag as opposed to Carey struggling to smile,” critiqued MDNA.

“Oh gosh, it looks HIDEOUS. The photo is a disaster: the pose, the hair, the whole vibe and the layout is atrocious. How in the world could they send this to press? Is it a school project made by interns on their lunch break? I’m shocked!” shared a dumbfounded Bertrando3.

“Obviously doesn’t have the wow factor as much as her last cover of Vogue Australia did, but I don’t mind the outcome of this at all. I’m rather fond of the minimal setup, the clean white masthead and the stark black font. An improvement from Zendaya and Dua Lipa at the very least!” voiced vogue28.

Nomar also shared the same sentiment: “The colors are lovely and she just oozes this natural elegance. One of the better Vogue Australia covers to come out in a while.”

Serena Williams Stars in Stuart Weitzman’s Spring 2020 Campaign

Stuart Weitzman’s advertising campaigns have looked the same for decades since they tend to be photographed by the usual suspects and feature the same faces (over and over again). The New York-based footwear brand did switch things up back in Fall 2018 and now for Spring 2020, the label has done it again by ushering in fresh talent and a new face for its latest. American Vogue regular Ethan James Green is the campaign photographer of choice this season capturing none other than tennis ace Serena Williams in the series of black and white images.

Serena’s role as the brand’s new ambassador divided our forum members. “Kick me in my head, but I will never get why she appeared on the fashion scene at all. It does NOT look good,” commented dontbeadrag.

“What a random choice. Some celebrities should stay away from the fashion industry,” avonlea002 chimed in.

“I mean, why does any celebrity appear on the fashion scene? Because they are a big name and have access to designers. That being said, I also expected to hate this, but it’s simple and clean, she looks great here. I’m pretty into it,” defended Joromana.

Urban Stylin was also pleasantly surprised: “I was prepared to hate it, but this is surprisingly good. Her muscles and body type give it a warrior vibe.”

“The black and white is obviously a Stuart Weitzman staple and Ethan James Green’s style of photography lends a fresh perspective here. I think the campaign feels fresh, is a departure from past campaigns and I like the border layout. Never usually one for Serena Williams, but I have no complaints here,” voiced vogue28.

“This is quite lovely,” admired mikel.

Bella and Gigi Hadid Go Retro for Vogue Paris

Glamour is always a good idea, even during these trying times. Emmanuelle Alt apparently agrees. Unwilling to deliver a blank cover or mask-wearing models kissing in response to the ongoing pandemic, Alt reminds us of brighter days ahead with two retro glam covers for the French fashion bible’s latest. Sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid each make a return to the cover of Vogue Paris for its double May/June 2020 edition. Captured by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the girls strike similar poses wearing haute couture creations from Christian Dior and Dolce & Gabbana selected by Alt for the two cover images.

Needless to say, the covers were an instant hit on our forums. “Like every single month, Emmanuelle is delivering some real and delicious fashion. Stunning,” praised helmutnotdead.

“Happy that Emmanuelle stayed true to herself. Beautiful covers and a much needed escape,” echoed YohjiAddict.

“Honestly, I can’t find any fault with this… I’m so happy with this, I can’t wait to see the content,” raved kokobombon.

LastNight was in the same frame of mind: “Bella’s cover is gorgeous! It’s so nice to see some unapologetic glamour — exactly what I want from a fashion magazine.”

“From heavy makeup to heavy styling — I love it!! The Hadids, opulence, vintage glamour — what’s there not to love? At first I preferred Bella’s because I love the clean, Grecian vibe and she’s so beautiful. But the more I look at it, the more I prefer the heaviness and pure glamour of Gigi’s cover,” admitted aracic.

“This is the glamorous escape I needed. Gigi and Bella aren’t my favorite models to say the least, but I’ve been warming up to them both over time and I think they look pretty decent on their respective covers!” confessed bluestar.

Judi Dench Makes History as British Vogue’s Oldest Cover Star

Edward Enninful is all about making history when it comes to British Vogue. It was back in 2018 that he welcomed Rihanna as the first black woman to ever grace the title’s all-important September issue and now for June 2020, he makes Judi Dench the magazine’s oldest cover star in its 104-year history. At 85, the legendary British actress poses in a floral Dolce & Gabbana trench (picked by Kate Phelan) before the lens of photographer Nick Knight for the vibrant and delightful cover shot proving age is simply a number.

The cover took our forum members by total surprise. “Glorious! Judi! So amazing to see her land a cover,” applauded honeycombchild straight away.

“Mad respect to British Vogue for featuring Judi!” added GERGIN.

“Very happy to see Judi on this, on any magazine cover to be honest, and the colors look amazing,” appreciated Benn98.

Sharing the same sentiment was Velasco: “What a refreshing surprise, especially in these times! So lovely.”

“This is fabulous! I adore the pink masthead. It’s a very pretty cover. Good for Edward for taking a risk,” commended an equally impressed GivenchyHomme.

Royal-Galliano couldn’t agree more. “Everything about this is so gorgeous. One of the best covers I’ve seen in a while really!”

“This is glorious. Sure Edward’s diversity agenda can seem a bit like window dressing from time to time, but he also does it right pretty often and this is definitely the case here,” voiced [Piece Of Me].

V Magazine Serves Up Lots of Models for Summer 2020

Not just one but a grand total of 15 beauties appear on the mag’s latest: Kaia Gerber, Adut Akech, He Cong, Lila Moss, Rebecca Leigh Longendyke, Rianne Van Rompaey, Vaughan Ollier, Mica Argañaraz, Adwoa Aboah, Ugbad Abdi, Grace Elizabeth, Lola Nicon, Vivienne Rohner, Zso Varju and Mariam de Vinzelle. As usual with multi-covers, only a select few stood out. “Kaia looks incredible, very Gia Carangi,” Marc10 pointed out.

“Kaia looks so beautiful. Her cover alone would’ve been enough,” MyNameIs chimed in.

“Adut, Rianne and Mariam are the winners here. The other ones are unnecessary,” said jorgepalomo.

Also quick to add their two cents was aracic: “My favorite of the bunch is definitely Adwoa, it’s very captivating. I also love Rianne and Adut’s covers. Great work!”

“The best covers are Adut, Lola, Vaughan and (choking as I’m typing this) Adwoa,” confessed Benn98.

MON wasn’t buying it. “WHERE are the SUPERMODELS?”

“Supermodels in 1990, 2000 or 2010 were unforgettable beauties with well-established careers. Supermodels in 2020 are a few good faces, but also a collection of famous surnames with watered-down genetics plus some average-looking people the industry uses to market social trends,” critiqued tigerrouge.

Vogue Arabia Asks Models to Photograph Themselves for Its May 2020 Covers

Fashion glossies are getting creative now that social distancing is the new norm and conventional photoshoots are no longer feasible. Ever since its inaugural issue back in 2017, Vogue Arabia has been breaking boundaries, like making Halima Aden the first hijab-wearing Vogue cover star or making bold political statements. For May 2020, the title asked Imaan Hammam, Constance Jablonski, Nora Attal and Eva Herzigova to photograph themselves during quarantine. The models actually put a lot of established photographers to shame with their images for the magazine’s latest installment.

Members of our forums were pleasantly surprised. “This is how you do a stay-at-home photoshoot! It looks professional and beautiful, it’s not another lazy, boring selfie in pajamas. Excellent work. Other magazines should take notice…” applauded aracic.

“Interesting how models can shoot and produce their own covers and make it look better than what we’ve seen from actual photographers. Imaan looks royal. Although I’m not sure they’re cover-worthy, they’re still a lot better than these annoying FaceTime photoshoots we’ve been seeing!” said Valentine27.

GivenchyAddict shared the same enthusiasm: “Imaan is absolutely fabulous. She did better than some photographers with or without the COVID-19 situation.”

“I really enjoy the simplicity of Nora’s cover, she looks gorgeous. Imaan’s cover is the best out of the four. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that it’s all her doing. AMAZING,” LustforFashion agreed.

“Now this is how you do a stay-at-home issue, still has to be fashion. Don’t show us people bathing their kittens or gardening in their pajamas. All four covers are stunning, well done Vogue Arabia. Fashion photographers better watch out!” exclaimed Urban Stylin.
