Style Showdown: Christina Hendricks’ Nefarious Neck Bow and More

Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ’em how it’s done. Here’s a look at some celebrity fashion hits and misses, from Christina Hendricks’ nefarious neck bow and Lucy Liu’s unpleasant plaid to Solange Knowles’ perfect palazzos and Jade Williams’ schoolgirl sweetness.

Trend: Wide-leg Pants

Miss: Katie Holmes was the center of attention at the Vanity Fair & Max Mara event where she was  honored as the 2011 Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future, but her navy double-breasted pantsuit from the line wasn’t winning any awards. A little volume in pants is welcome after seasons of skinnies, but Holmes’ jacket was too long and the bottom-heavy look overwhelmed her frame; a defined high waist might’ve saved this pantsuit, and the stuffy blazer should’ve been unbuttoned to avoid the frumpy visions of chefs and sea captains it conjures.

Hit: Solange Knowles has done it again. At the Dream Downtown opening in NYC, the DJ showed Holmes how to wear wide-leg pants; her aqua green palazzos were balanced by her tucked-in white blouse with shredded sleeves. Her coral lips were on trend and completed the fresh look.

Trend: Summer Plaid

Miss: Lucy Liu’s been wearing all panda-inspired white-and-black ensembles to promote the premiere of Kung Fu Panda 2 and most have worked, but this plaid Vivienne Westwood number should’ve been karate chopped by her stylist. The bow on the bodice flops too far and looks like it’s going to take the whole thing down with it, and the print combined with the black pumps is too wintry.

Hit: Chloe Moretz stepped out in style at the Academy of the Art’s Summer Exhibition Preview Party in London to show Liu that a touch of tartan can be worn in summer. Her age-appropriate Carven dress featured an eye-catching neckline and fun pockets, and Moretz brightened it with summery touches like her lavender nails and nude strappy sandals.

Miss: Christina Hendricks is usually a knock-out, but maybe she’s tired of all the attention because the suit she wore to the premiere of Drive at the Los Angeles Film Festival was altogether matronly. The bursting blazer looked much too tight for Hendricks’ bombshell figure and though neck bows have been spotted on celebrities like Alexa Chung lately, this one was too high and competed with the ruffles on her mauve blouse.

Hit: If Hendricks’ ensemble said schoolmarm, Sunday Girl aka Jade Williams’ look at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition was schoolgirl chic. Her circle skirt and breezy peter pan collared blouse were pulled together by the loose black neck bow for a look that was girly without scarifying sexy.
