Style Showdown: Lindsay Lohan Wins One, Loses One

Sometimes stars get it right, and sometimes they need another celeb to step in and show ’em how it’s done. Here’s a look at celebrity hits and misses, from Lindsay Lohan’s sloppy off-the-shoulder look and Anna Dello Russo’s Walter Steiger misstep to Kim Kardashian’s put-together black and white and Rachel Zoe’s pleasant peasantry.

Miss: English socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson is used to frequenting black tie events where the tuxedos are many, but when she decided to wear the pants herself the look went all wrong. At the Demons Never Die premiere in London, the main problem with the ‘It’ girl’s tuxedo pants was in the proportion—they should’ve either been slimmer at the bottom for a tapered look or wider all over like a palazzo pant. The wide belt sat too low on her hips and her long necklace, studded mules, and quilted bag cheapened the tuxedo effect.

Hit: It can be difficult to find a traveling outfit that marries fashion and comfort, but Kim Kardashian arrived at the Atlantic Palms Hotel in Dubai in style. Her white-on-black outfit avoids what was wrong with Palmer-Tomkinson’s—her pants sit on the waist and taper to a harem shape which is figure-flattering with her elegant wrap top. She kept her accessories to a minimum, with an on-trend wide belt, gold watch, leopard flats, and an oversized traveling bag.

Trend: Walter Steiger Curved Heel Boots

Miss: There’s nothing amiss with Anna Dello Russo’s curved heel Walter Steiger “Muse” ankle boots—they’re a more wearable version of the awesome Alexander McQueen monster heels favored by Lady Gaga, and celebs are all over them. But why mar such exquisite footwear with such a strange outfit? The fashion editor is known for her unique styling, but this jumper is just odd—the fuzzy, wraparound belt looks haphazard and the jumper could have benefitted from a few extra inches of fabric to hide those ghastly ribs.

Hit: Lindsay Lohan looked as puzzled as I am about Dello Russo’s outfit while out and about in NYC. Her high-fashion look did the Walter Steiger boots justice, with head-toe-black punched up with gold accessories like a Chanel logo belt, layered necklace, and sunglasses.

Trend: Off-the-Shoulder Dress

Miss: Unfortunately, Lohan can’t win ‘em all. As one forum user put it, “her daytime looks are much better than her nighttime looks!!” [franki]. Most agreed that the black satin off-the-shoulder look she wore to the Saints Row: The Third game launch in LA wasn’t working for her. The sloppy dress was so drapey it looked like it would drape right off of her.

Hit: Stylist Rachel Zoe knows that the off-the-shoulder look works so much better as a peasant dress. At the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in LA she wore a 70s boho-inspired all-white look. The outfit isn’t perfect—one forum user commented that the look was great but would work better on someone younger [Versace-Goddess], and one suggested that she lose the long necklace [Emilee]—but Zoe definitely honed in on the languid, old money glamour of the occasion.
