Style Showdown: Dark and Dramatic

Trend #1: Vampy Lips

Miss: Summer beauty isn’t all about beachy bronzer and popsicle-pink lips anymore. This season, a dark vampy lip is a stylish way to add drama to your makeup, but there’s a fine line between style statement and Hot Topic. Katy Perry missed the mark at the NARM Music Biz Awards Dinner Los Angeles where her plum lips clashed with her violet locks. Her makeup artist forgot that the key to balancing a dark lip is keeping the eyes simple and polished, making Perry’s features appear ghoulish. Plus, the exposed roots and bra strap just make this look cheesy.

Hit: Kate Bosworth nailed the vampy look at the Met Ball earlier this month. Her wine-stained lips played up the tones in her feathered dress, and the expert way that she slicked her hair into a chic topknot and left the rest of her face low-key to allowed the lip color to take center stage.

Trend #2: Side Cut-Outs

Miss: Stars can’t get enough of cut-outs, and as the weather heats up, expect to see a lot more of them. But the cut-outs on the sides of the purple Versus dress that Chloe Sevigny wore to the Hit & Miss TV preview in London were just one of the trends that this look was trying—and failing—to achieve. From the armpits down, this too-tight frock could be an OK bandage dress, but the high neck, uncomfortable-looking bodice, and voluminous, rounded, and rumpled shoulders give this dress an ill-fitting appearance. The leather gladiator sandals/ankle boots just don’t make sense with the dress—although I’m not sure what dress they’d make sense with.

Hit: One might be tempted to blame the designer, but Diane Kruger kicked off Cannes in another dress by Versus that was equally daring but in all the right ways. The lacing on the sides of Kruger’s dress created cut-outs in a unique way and fit her figure to perfection. I’m not wild about the pleated skirt (it gives the dress a sexy cheerleader look if you think about it for too long), but Kruger makes up for it just for having the guts to go with this one. I love that the mesh Jimmy Choo sandals echo the zig-zag created by the straps on the dress.

Trend #3: Alexander McQueen Chain belt

Close call: Two girls, one belt. Chloe Moretz and Kristen Stewart both reached for the same McQ by Alexander McQueen leather belt with a gold chain detail when dressing for film premieres this week. At the UK premiere of Dark Shadows, Moretz used hers to toughen her velvet dress by the same designer and emphasize the bell shape of the skirt. Kristen Stewart wore the same belt to the Berlin premiere of Snow White and The Hunstman in Berlin, adding definition to the waist in her plaid Derek Lam sheath dress. While the belt’s unexpected chain works in both looks, I’ve got to give points to Stewart for creativity in her styling—Moretz simply took her look straight from the Fall 2012 runway. It’s your call—which starlet wore the belt better?
