Tilda Swinton’s Artful Androgyny Proves in Demand in 2013

Tilda Swinton has long been admired for her ability to fashionably blend masculine and feminine aesthetics on the red carpet. It may only be April, but the actress is already having a pretty busy year. She starred in David Bowie's celebrity-themed video and Karl Lagerfeld shot Tilda for Chanel's Paris-Edinburgh campaign, with the advertisements scheduled to hit magazines this June. She even made a surprise appearance last weekend at the Museum of Modern Art where she slept in a glass box as part of an ongoing performance piece. Tilda hasn’t put acting on the back burner, though, and she‘ll soon be featured alongside Matt Damon in The Zero Theorem.

Since Tilda appeared in David Bowie’s video, it made sense she would attend the David Bowie is exhibition private viewing night in London last month. She arrived decked out in a Haider Ackermann Fall 2013 ensemble comprised of a jacquard blazer, a printed shirt and tweed pants. Tilda’s always rocked a pretty androgynous style. At the National Board of Review Awards Gala in New York City back in January 2012, she opted for a menswear-inspired look from Haider Ackermann’s Spring 2012 collection, including a purple silk blouse and wide-leg pants.

A few days later, Tilda showed up for the 17th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in Los Angeles outfitted in a black and white YSL Edition Soir 2012 suit. Her semi-sheer blouse, black tuxedo jacket and white pants combination was accented by an embroidered cummerbund, a Pomellato ring and black platform heels. She once again relied on Haider Ackermann for the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards, but her tailored blue suit dress was a uniquely elegant choice. Tilda polished off her overtly feminine look with an impressive array of Fred Leighton jewels.

It was a custom ivory Lanvin long sleeve gown for Tilda at the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at the end of the month. Several Pomellato rings and a Fred Leighton cuff wrapped up her look. Céline was behind the crisp white Pre-Fall 2012 ensemble Tilda wore to the 2012 BAFTA Awards in London in February of last year. Another Pomellato ring and a pair of embellished sandals completed the look.

During last year’s 65th Annual Cannes International Film Festival, Tilda was busy promoting Moonrise Kingdom and picked a rather ladylike look for the photocall. Her soft purple blouse and periwinkle pencil skirt were both by Haider Ackermann, while Nicholas Kirkwood was the source of those nude platform pumps. Tilda also wore Haider Ackermann later that night for the movie’s premiere. Her copper-colored Fall 2012 gown featured a fantastic fanned bodice.
