Karl Lagerfeld is so overexposed, he’s getting sick of himself.

The German designer, who presented his ready-to-wear collection for Chanel last Friday, also designs for Fendi and his own Karl Lagerfeld line.
With his trademark white ponytail and dark glasses, the pop culture icon is the subject of an umpteenth documentary, that showed on French television on Sunday, and he was even featured in the latest installment of the video game Grand Theft Auto.
"I’m suffering from an overdose of myself," Lagerfeld told reporters after the show. "At a certain point, you ask yourself, am I a puppet or not?"
To paraphrase Shakespeare, the gentleman doth protest too much.
Friday’s show was worthy of a Hollywood production, with models parading across a film set reproducing Chanel’s headquarters in the exclusive rue Cambon–five-storey facade, pavement and all.

Models stepped out of a mock Chanel boutique wearing the house’s classic tweed suit, updated with an oversized grid pattern in graphic white or holographic sequins.
One model ambled down the catwalk (or rather street) with a guitar slung over the shoulder of her metallic lilac gypsy dress.

Perhaps Lagerfeld was inspired by the slew of upcoming movies about the house’s founder, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, starring actresses as diverse as Audrey Tautou and Shirley MacLaine.
"Some directors, whose names I will not mention, have even been approached about making a movie about my life. I think it’s ridiculous. Who would be able to play me, both young and the way I am today?" said Lagerfeld, who recently turned 70 or 75, depending on the source.
For the time being, the designer is happy to feed the publicity machine that has made Chanel a powerhouse among luxury brands, a century after its creation. A self-confessed compulsive shopper, he offered leather tote versions of the label’s paper shopping bags.
"It’s a little wink. And in the times we are living in, I think the guarantee of quality and stability of the big brands is what will survive in the end," he said.
On a more dubious note, outfits ranging from little black dresses to chic cocktail suits were paired with patterned hose that created the illusion the models were wearing the cropped leggings popular with the likes of actress Lindsay Lohan.

"Unfortunately, 15-year-old girls are the ones who inspire women of a certain age," said Lagerfeld. "The girls love them. We didn’t recover a single pair after the show."
