When Obama delivered his tear-streaked Farewell Address on January 10, many were left with a feeling of fear and emptiness in the pit of their stomachs. The Hollywood set was no exception. During the 2016 election, many celebs campaigned for Hillary Clinton. Among them Meryl Streep, who used her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award at last week’s Golden Globes to drag President Elect Trump’s anti-immigrant policies. As Streep pointed out, Hollywood is “just a bunch of people from other places…Amy Adams was born in Vicenza, Italy. And Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem…And the beautiful Ruth Negga was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, raised in London — no, in Ireland I do believe.”
Which is perhaps why Amy Adams, Natalie Portman, Ruth Negga and more celebrities agreed to participate in the above video, a complement to W magazine’s “Come Together” issue. In the clip, a bevy of A-listers — some (Taraji P. Henson) more spirited than others (Michelle Williams) — belt out Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” It’s silly, it’s fun, it’s “just the antidote for a still-grieving Hollywood, many members of which were outspoken Hillary Clinton supporters over the past year — and a few of whom have found themselves on the unfriendly end of Donald Trump’s Twitter account,” holds W.
“While the song has long been interpreted through a socially conscious lens, it’s the kind of anthem we need now more than ever with the inauguration bearing down on us,” the publication continues. “With an impending Donald Trump presidency, I will survive.”
