6 Things We Learned About Relationships from Chick Flicks

1. “He’s Just Not That Into You”

Movie Synopsis: Gigi, a single girl who constantly overanalyzes and misinterprets men’s intentions, meets bar owner Alex who helps her navigate the dating scene. She soon finds herself falling for him, assuming that all the “signs” he’s taught her regarding a man’s interest are there. Alex rejects Gigi initially but eventually realizes he likes her too.

What We Learned: As much as we love Gigi, her incessant phone calls and stalking of guys she hardly knows is a major turnoff. Quit making excuses for men. If he likes you, he’ll call! If not, you’re better off without him.

Fave Quote: Maybe a happy ending doesn’t include a guy, maybe… it’s you, on your own, picking up the pieces and starting over, freeing yourself up for something better in the future. Maybe the happy ending is… just… moving on. Or maybe the happy ending is this, knowing after all the unreturned phone calls, broken hearts, through the blunders and misread signals, through all the pain and embarrassment you never gave up hope.” – Gigi

2. “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days”

Movie Synopsis: Writer Andie Anderson goes to extreme lengths (we’re talking psychotic) to get advertising exec Ben Barry to break up with her. Meanwhile Ben, who accepts a bet from his friends, puts up with her BS in an effort to make Andie fall in love with him. Naturally, the two form a real connection, discover each other’s secrets, fight publicly, and then wind up together in the end.

What We Learned: While this high-larious rom-com is chocked full of way too many dating don’ts to cover, our favorite probably has to be when Andie makes a photo album of her and Ben’s future wedding and children. If you ever want to scare a guy off QUICK, there’s honestly no better way to do it than this. Well, besides naming his you know what “Princess Sophia”!

Fave Quote: “If you are gonna name my… member, you have to name it something hyper masculine. Something like Spike, or Butch, or Krull the Warrior King!” – Ben

3. “The Notebook”

Movie Synopsis: Rich girl Allie falls in love with country boy Noah, but once her parents find out about the relationship, she’s forbidden to see him. She’s shipped off to New York where she meets and becomes engaged to a wealthy young lawyer named Lon. One day Allie stumbles across a photo of Noah in the newspaper though and feels compelled to go back and see him. She lies to Lon and the two end up sleeping together. Ultimately, Allie chooses Noah.

What We Learned: This love story definitely teaches us to follow our heart and not date someone just because they look good on paper or because our parents approve. Money doesn’t equal happiness, and Allie and Noah are a perfect example of this.

Fave Quote: “Southern summers are indifferent to the trials of young love. Armed with warnings and doubts, Noah and Allie gave a remarkably convincing portrayal of a boy and a girl traveling down a very long road with no regard for the consequences.” – Duke

4. “Bride Wars”

Movie Synopsis: By mistake, BFFs Emma and Liv are both scheduled to get married at the same place on the same date. Insanity ensues as these brides turn from sweet to sour trying to destroy each other’s wedding and driving their men nuts in the process. Emma eventually comes to the realization that she and Fletcher (Emma’s fiancé) just aren’t meant to be.

What We Learned: Other than the obvious (you shouldn’t be a crazy, psychotic bridezilla), Emma really teaches us to take a good look at our relationship before we walk down the aisle. As women, it’s so easy to get caught up in the idea of marriage that we completely block out the fact that the person we’re marrying may not be “the one”.

Fave Quote: “It was quite a wedding, and as I stood there watching, I realized something I’d forgotten a long time ago. Sometimes in life there really are bonds formed that can never be broken. Sometimes you really can find that one person who will stand by you no matter what. Maybe you will find it in a spouse and celebrate it with your dream wedding. But there’s also the chance that the one person you can count on for a lifetime, the one person who knows you sometimes better than you know yourself is the same person who’s been standing beside you all along.” – Marion St. Claire

5. “Going The Distance”

Movie Synopsis: Erin and Garrett struggle to maintain a long distance relationship between New York and California, but things get even more complicated when Erin lands her dream job in San Francisco. Not wanting to be the reason she turns it down, Garrett lets her go. After 6 long months, the two reunite and Erin finds out Garrett now has a new job managing a band in LA.

What We Learned: Long distance relationships may suck, but Erin and Garrett prove that if you put in the hard work and never lose sight of yourself and your goals, you can make it work. It’s all about compromise, and both partners have to be willing to give a little. No one person can make all the sacrifices, or they’ll wind up unhappy.

Fave Quote: “Now, look, I have done the long distance thing. And it is hard. As hell. And it doesn’t matter how good the relationship is, it literally can just rip it apart. Look, it’s just very hard to be away from the person you love for months at a time.” – Box

6. “A Walk To Remember”

Movie Synopsis: Jamie and Landon, an unlikely high school couple, fall in love after he’s forced to participate in drama club. Regardless of what his friends think, he sticks by her side through Leukemia and works to make all her dreams come true before she passes away.

What We Learned: The most important thing this movie teaches us is to cherish the time you have together. And to never judge. Love can find you in the most unlikely of places and turn your world upside down, for better or worse. You just have to be open to it. Screw what your friends think, unless they actually have valid points.

Fave Quote: “Jamie saved my life. She taught me everything. About life, hope and the long journey ahead. I’ll always miss her. But our love is like the wind. I can’t see it, but I can feel it.” – Landon
