How I Got to Be…with Pari Dust’s Pari Ehsan

tFS: What’s your process for pairing art and fashion?

PE: By the end of the season, I have photographic knowledge of most designers’ aesthetics. I also go on Style.com a lot and troll through the collections. Or if I’m looking for a marble print dress, I might just search online.

tFS: Does fashion or art come first?

PE: It’s gone both ways. If I work for a brand, I start with clothes and go from there. But the majority of the time, it starts with the art. Every Saturday I go to all the galleries in the city. I start uptown, move through Chelsea and then end up in the Lower East Side.

tFS: What’s your favorite museum to go to?

PE: Dia:Beacon is my all-time favorite. It’s in the middle of nature and the grounds are beautiful. It’s a really special place.

tFS: When you’re not photographing yourself, what do you like to wear?

PE: I try to keep it a little more minimal on a daily basis since some of the looks can be a little maximal. I love onesies; they’re easy.

tFS: What’s the biggest misconception about your job?

PE: It’s easy to think that things happen by chance — that I just stumble into a gallery and match. But the pairings are very intentional and I’ve put a lot of thought into them. Not only do I think about the outfit, but also the compositional details, like where I stand in relation to the work.

tFS: How much time do you devote to your blog on a daily basis?

PE: I work six to seven days a week. A lot of that work is scouting. Then I have to prepare, shoot and write. There’s also a lot of emails and phone calls to get permission from the galleries. I always have to have a lot of wheels in motion.
